Container Grades: WWT vs CW Explained

Container grades determine their condition and price. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right container for your project without overpaying.

One-Trip (New)

What does it mean? The container made a single trip from the factory (usually China) to Panama with cargo.

Condition: Practically new. No significant dents, minimal rust only at contact points, original paint intact, new seals.

Best for:

- Visible architectural projects

- High-end container homes

- Showrooms and stores

- Export (requires current certification)

- Projects where appearance matters

Considerations: They're the most expensive but offer the longest lifespan and best initial appearance.

CW (Cargo Worthy)

What does it mean? "Cargo Worthy" indicates the container is certified for international maritime transport. It has passed structural inspection.

Condition: Good structural condition. May have minor dents, surface rust, and cosmetic wear. All critical functions intact.

Best for:

- Storage that might move in the future

- Temporary construction projects

- When you need the option to export later

- Businesses requiring certification

Considerations: You pay extra for certification. If you don't plan to move the container by sea, a WWT may be a better option.

WWT (Wind & Water Tight)

What does it mean? "Wind & Water Tight" guarantees the container is sealed - no wind or water enters. It's the standard for storage.

Condition: Functionally perfect for static storage. May have visible cosmetic wear: dents, surface rust, worn paint. What matters is it protects your contents.

Best for:

- Fixed-site storage

- Warehouses and depots

- Budget-conscious projects

- Conversions where you'll paint anyway

- Most uses in Panama

Considerations: Best value for static use. Not certified for maritime transport.

As-Is (As Is)

What does it mean? Sold in current condition without guarantees. May have significant damage.

Condition: Variable. May include: holes in roof or walls, damaged floors, doors that don't seal, perforated rust, structural damage.

Best for:

- Creative/artistic projects

- When you only need the structure

- Experienced buyers who can evaluate and repair

- Very limited budgets

Considerations: Requires personal inspection. Initial savings may be lost in repairs. Not recommended for first-time buyers.

Which to choose?

Our recommendation for Panama:

For general storage: WWT is the best option. It will protect your contents perfectly and offers the best price.

For offices or container homes: Consider One-Trip if budget allows, or WWT/CW if you plan extensive modifications (you'll paint and modify it anyway).

For temporary construction: WWT or CW depending on whether you need to move it between sites.

For export or transport: CW is mandatory per international regulations.
