Operating reefer or NOR: two different products

An operating reefer keeps its refrigeration machinery running: it holds controlled temperatures from -25 °C to +25 °C and works as a stationary cold room for food, flowers or pharmaceutical product. A non-operating reefer (NOR) is the same high-density-insulated, stainless-lined box with the machinery decommissioned: it does not cool, but its insulation makes it excellent thermal storage for a tropical climate, at a considerably lower cost and with zero power consumption. The key question is whether your product needs active cooling or just thermal stability. Tell us what you plan to store and we will tell you frankly which of the two you actually need.

The electrical reality: three-phase power

Before buying an operating reefer, look at your power supply. The refrigeration unit runs on three-phase power at 380 or 440 volts: it does not plug into a residential outlet. If your premises or farm already has three-phase service, hookup is straightforward; if not, the options are requesting the connection from your utility, using a suitable transformer, or running the unit off a generator, which is common for field operations and events. Factor in continuous consumption too: a cold room runs 24/7. If that infrastructure does not exist and is not justified, a NOR unit as insulated storage is usually the honest answer. We help you evaluate your case before quoting.

Who buys reefers in Panama?

Three buyer profiles come up again and again. Agri-exporters: coffee and vegetable growers in the Chiriquí highlands who need an on-farm cold room, and pineapple and flower exporters building their cold chain ahead of shipment. Fisheries: seafood companies on both coasts storing frozen product right at the landing point. And events: fairs, catering operations and productions that need temporary cooling where there is no infrastructure. We also sell to supermarkets, restaurants and pharmaceutical companies as backup for their fixed cold rooms. Whatever your case, we send real photos of the unit, verification that the machinery runs, and a written quote with a final price, delivery included.
